Rio Mesa Varsity Season Comes to an End

Camarillo (4-5, 2-2 PVL)
at Rio Mesa (1-8, 1-3 PVL)

The Sun Setting on the Spartans' 2008 Varsity Football Season

It is November 14th, it is 84 degrees at our 7:00 p.m. kickoff time and the Santa Ana winds are howling...

... Oh, and don't forget it was also a Full Moon!

A packed Stadium at John Reardon Field for the season finale.

The stakes?  Bragging rights for the next year for sure, for the seniors bragging rights for the rest of their lives.

Wackily enough, if the Spartans win, their record in Pacific View League play would be 2-3 and would drop Camarillo to 2-3 also in league action.  The tie breaker to go to the playoffs as the PVL's third and final entry...the win over Camarillo.  If Channel Islands beats Hueneme tonight then it would be a three way tie for third place with each of us beating Hueneme and each other so the league had to resort to a coin flip which we won earlier in the day.

All we had to do was beat Camarillo to raise our record to 2-8, 2-3 PVL and we would be playoff bound???

Enrique Thomas

He explodes here on a 42 yard TD run with 4:56 left in the third quarter to extend the Rio Mesa lead to 10-0!

"BLOCK THAT KICK..."

In the end, the Scorpions rallied to win 14-13 thus improving to 5-5, 3-2 in the PVL and winning the third place bid to the 2008 C.I.F. Playoffs.

For the Spartans, the disappointing 1-9, 1-4 PVL season was mercifully over at last.
